A day in your life might seem routine to you, but it can mean life-giving help for someone in need! OneDayChallenge is Calvary Church’s fall missions emphasis. Each year, we celebrate how the work of our hands—one day’s wage—can make a difference in our world.
Developing churches, communities and generations in Romania sounds like a lot to take on, but Pastor Gigel Olariu has been on this mission for over 30 years. Grace Christian Ministries of Romania was established to build God’s kingdom, shape the next generation through education and bring communities out of poverty. This year’s OneDayChallenge will support the three goals of this ministry.
Building God’s kingdom was the first vision of Pastor Gigel. Early into his calling, he was planting churches and starting Bible studies. He loves the verse, “In the beginning was the Word,” because he knows that God’s Word can do amazing things. He has already started a handful of churches and excitedly awaits God’s provision for more. Beyond individual churches, the Bible Training Center was established to provide Bible study resources, retreats and space for gathering and training. Special camps are held throughout the year for nursing home residents, orphans and inmates from juvenile prisons. The center acts as a beacon of light to the poverty-stricken people of southern Romania. Desperate for hope and help, these churches and the training center are refuges for their surrounding communities.
A refuge for many of Romania’s children is school. Knowing this, it is through education that Pastor Gigel plans to shape the next generation of Romanian Christians. Grace Christian School began as a preschool and kindergarten in 2008 and has now expanded to eighth grade. In a region where most people don’t have more than a fourth-grade education, these students are learning about the world around them and about the God who created it. What students learn in the classroom, they then take home and apply to their home life and relationships. Parents often ask the school for Bibles so they can find the verses that their children are learning in class. This is the hope: that children change their families who change communities who change generations.
To change these communities, Pastor Gigel knows that it will take more than a school; strengthening communities means making social justice a priority. Recognizing how poverty and education go hand in hand, Pastor Gigel established a community center and free clinic to provide the desperately needed basic resources to students and their families. They can shower, wash their clothes, get a meal and receive medical check-ups. Pastor Gigel is realistic but hopeful about his mission: “It’s true we have limited resources, but we have a God that’s unlimited, and we have brothers and sisters all over the world. His love puts us together and assures us that we can move forward.”
We look forward to what one day’s wage can do for a ministry with a heart for the poverty-stricken communities of Romania. The mission of OneDayChallenge is to support Hope Christian Ministries by offering one day from the life of Calvary Church. Join us as we translate the everyday work of our hands into support for a community far in location but close to heart.
